Between the Lines

It was just four days ago (give or take a century) that the RMS Titanic set sail from Ireland, headed for the White Star docks at New York City.

Of course, we know the Titanic never completed its maiden voyage across the Atlantic. It was 100 years ago this morning (April 15) that the ship met its tragic fate and became one of the most famous sea voyages in history.

This week we have added some new material to our collection of local news files, thanks to a random phone call.

Ray Bradbury, who died Sunday, was one of those authors of my childhood, along with Asimov and King, who made me fall in love with the short story, and with twist endings, and sci-fi.

If you missed seeing the movie based on Kathryn Stockett's The Help earlier this month at DeMotte, there is another showing Tuesday Jan. 10 at 5:30 p.m.at the Rensselaer Library and Thursday, Jan. 26 at 10 a.m. at the Wheatfield Library.

In the coming weeks we will be sure to fill in our ranks of movies with some of the surprise winners at the 84th Annual Academy Awards, aka the 2012 Oscars. In the meantime, whet your appetite with this glimpse of what we have available at the library right now:

Back Home Again in Rensselaer poses with Mayor Wood at Hanley Park

This year, the City of Rensselaer is competing with several other communities in Indiana for a chance to be chosen by the Indianapolis Motor Speedway's 2012 "Back Home Again in Indiana" Community Outreach Program to receive a $20,000 grant.

We are unveiling a brand new catalog next month that we hope will make things easier than ever for you to find and request books and manage your library account.

Celebrate National Library Week April 14-20

This week, Jasper County Public Library, located in Rensselaer, DeMotte and Wheatfield, joins libraries in schools, campuses and communities nationwide in celebrating National Library Week, a time to highlight the value of libraries, librarians and library workers.

Wheatfield artist Doris Myers is known for capturing the loveliness of her surroundings on canvas.

The annual Rensselaer Fall Festival was another success for the Friends and the kids who attended. Thanks to everyone who came out for cheap hot dogs, free white elephant bingo, and prizes. Thanks also to Saint Joseph's College for the help!

All year long the library has programs for book lovers of all ages, from infants to seniors. These programs are so ever-present that we just take them for granted. When do you have story time? Oh, there will be a new one any time now.

Janeen Swart is a retired DeMotte Elementary School teacher who has taken up the art of writing stories in her spare time.

Tuesday morning as East Coast residents woke to the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, the pleas were already being made for blood donations, funds donations, and other ways for those of us who can to help our fellow Americans.

Kids who take part in the library programs get to do more than just read books. Sometimes they get to taste them as well.

If you haven't heard about the farming video taking the country by storm this week, now is your chance to watch "I'm Farming and I Grow It," the viral parody of LMFAO's annoyingly catchy dance hit "I'm Sexy and I Know It."
