David Bowie as Jareth the Goblin King in Labyrinth.

Few artists can boast a career and fame equal to that of David Bowie. For 50 years he influenced music, pop art and culture from Asia, to America, to his native U.K.

Whether introducing the world to the iconic "Major Tom" in Space Oddity, released controversially just days before man would land on the moon, or presenting himself as the fictional Ziggy Stardust, or wowing generations with his performance as Jareth the Goblin King in the '80s fantasy hit Labyrinth, the works of David Bowie are forever part of mainstream life.

The BBC writes "David Bowie changed music forever." He has won fourteen awards including two BRIT Awards, a Grammy Award, a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, an Ivor Novello Award and three MTV Video Awards. His name is on a Hollywood Walk of Fame star, and  he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

He passed away this week (Jan. 10, 2016) after a private battle with cancer.

David Bowie will be missed by countless fans and admiring peers. You can learn more about him through his music and biographies at the library.
