Olympic games are times of International celebration. In 1996, Jasper County Indiana got to share a little bit of that spirit as the torch relay passed through DeMotte, Rensselaer and Remington, on its way to the opening of the Atlanta games that July 19.
In recognition of the return of spring sports, the Republican is presenting a spring sport that has a rich history at Rensselaer – boys golf – because of the leadership of lomg-time coach Rich Stefanich. Members of the 1971 team, one of Stefanich’s first at RCHS, included (front, L to R) coach Stefanich, Myles Beeching, Mark Malone, Jim Weinberg, Rich Mangas, and Bob Kurtz. (Back, L to R) Rick Smith, Bill Critser, Tom O’Brien, Jeff Tonner, Chris Zorich, Ed Courtright, Tony Cappuccilli and Bill Holbrook. The Bombers finished 16 – 4 in dual meets in 1971and Rick Mangas, who had the low average score for the team, was match medalist in the Northwest Hoosier Conference Meet as a sophomore.
