Celebrate National Library Week April 14-20
This week, Jasper County Public Library, located in Rensselaer, DeMotte and Wheatfield, joins libraries in schools, campuses and communities nationwide in celebrating National Library Week, a time to highlight the value of libraries, librarians and library workers.
Libraries today are more than repositories for books and other resources. Often the heart of their communities, campuses or schools, libraries are deeply committed to the places where their patrons live, work and study. Libraries are trusted places where everyone in the community can gather to reconnect and reengage with each other to enrich and shape the community and address local issues.
Whether through offering e-books and technology classes, materials for English-language learners, programs for job seekers or those to support early literacy, librarians listen to the community they serve, and they respond.
Service to the community has always been the focus of the library. While this aspect has never changed, libraries have grown and evolved in how they provide for the needs of every member of their community.
This year, National Library Week will be observed with a Daily Prize Giveaway, during which prizes will randomly be given out to patrons each day of the week.
Also, children ages 3 through 11 are invited to “Dig Into Reading” by picking up a coloring page from any branch of JCPL, located in Rensselaer, DeMotte or Wheatfield, and enter the completed page in a Coloring Contest. This Coloring Contest is held in conjunction with the library’s upcoming “Dig Into Reading” Summer Reading Program
Coloring pages will be judged by age categories and one winner will be chosen from each age category. Coloring sheets will be available at the circulation desk of any branch of JCPL.
There are also benefits for those choosing to "check in" at their library this week using social media. Patrons who check in using Foursquare, Twitter or Facebook can receive special collectible items, including phone charms and other items to be announced.
First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country each April.
