Beneath the Surface - Summer Reading 2013

Teen Summer Reading Kick Off Week

Teens at the Jasper County Public Library are invited to look “Beneath the Surface” this summer and read books for prizes as well as attend weekly programs, designed with this age group in mind. Dates, times and ages for weekly teen programs at JCPL are as follows:

--Thursday, June 6 @ 2 pm, the Wheatfield Library invites teens who have completed grades 4-11 and who are signed up for “Books for Bucks: Beneath the Surface” to “Gaming With Wii & XBOX,” and on Thursday, June 13 @ 2 pm, “Recycled Craft” will be the program for teens who have completed grades 4-11 who are signed up for “Beneath the Surface.”

--Tuesday, June 12 @ 3:30 pm, the Rensselaer Library kicks off the “Beneath the Surface” Summer Reading Program for grades 6-12 with an Ice Cream Social. Registration is required.

--Thursday, June 13@ 2 pm, the DeMotte Library invites teens who are entering grades 5-12 and who are signed up for “Books for Bucks: Beneath the Surface” to “Bully Prevention” presented by ATA Martial Arts.

Registration is required for all Teen Programs @ JCPL. Register online for these programs or call the Rensselaer Library, 866-5881, the DeMotte Library, 987-2221 or the Wheatfield Library, 956-3774.

Books For Bucks - DeMotte Summer Reading 2013

This summer at the DeMotte Library, reading will earn young adults the chance to win cash prizes!

“Books for Bucks” is back, and kicks off with online registration the week of May 13. Books for Bucks is open to teens entering grades 5-12, and all you have to do to participate is stop in the library, pick up a reading record sheet and read!

This summer’s Books for Bucks theme is “Beneath the Surface.” Weekly cash prizes will be awarded, as well as special coupons to area businesses. Coupons must not exceed a total of five per participant.

Items read for the program may include books, magazines, or newspapers, must be checked out from the DeMotte Library, and be age appropriate. Registration for this program begins May 13 and will continue until Monday, June 3 when reading booklets will be available for teens to pick up.

A variety of weekly programs will also be offered each Thursday at 2 pm, and are free and open to all Books for Bucks participants.

Rensselaer Teen Summer Reading 2013

Teens in grades 6-12 are eligible to participate in the library’s “Beneath the Surface” Summer Reading Event. Reading books will earn the chance to win prizes and weekly programs for this age group will be held on Tuesdays @ 2 pm.

Summer Reading packets that contain the required reading elements for teens may also be picked up at the library June 3-8. Registration is available online and will start June 4 or you can register after that date by visiting or calling the Rensselaer Library at 866-5881.

We're searching for a few good teens to help with our Summer Reading Programs! Teens who enjoy working with young children are invited to the Wheatfield Library for our Teen Volunteer Workshop. The workshop is a requirement for becoming a volunteer.

Children and teens who are signed up for Summer Reading are invited to attend oue annual Ice Cream Social kickoff at the Rensselaer Library.

Northwest Indiana Solid Waste district will be hosting a program on Worms and Vermicomposting. Get the dirt on how important worms are to the environment.

Teens 6 thru 12th grade who are participating in the "Beneath the Surface" reading program are invited to join us.

Take an old book and make it something totally unique and new. Bring your creative juices, we provide the books and art supplies.

We will take a vote and you will decide what movies we will be watching. Choose from Action and Adventure to Sci-fi and Aliens. Stop by the library for more information.

Learn about rocks and gems with hands-on crafts and activities. Enjoy rock candy, tour an Indiana cave, make a paperweight or magnet, and explore the mineral kingdom. You will have a Rock-in time.

We will be making Earth Cookies. Come and join us and see what the cookies are made of and enjoy a special treat. Registration requested, limit 12.

Children and Teens who participated in the Summer Reading Program are invited to the final program.  Come and enjoy some delicious watermelon. It will be a yummy way to end the Summer Reading Program and celebrate all the books you read.
